Welcome to the homepage of The Dell Woodland Heritage Project, Thorpe St Andrew, Norwich

Overview of the Project by David Armstrong (Project Manager)

The South Avenue & Western Avenue Woodland Trust consists of 12 households, backing onto the woodland known as 'The Dell' , in what is now the Norwich suburb of Thorpe St Andrew.

Our partners and supporters

The Trust has been greatly supported by the Norwich Fringe Project (sponsored by Broadland District Council) in maintaining the woodland in the past, and now with this current Heritage initiative.

In addition the Parish Tree Wardens have been an invaluable help. The Council Tree Officer has approved the project in principle (relative to the Tree Preservation Orders).

Local residents, and organisations, have been

invited to participate through signs at the entrance to the woodland, newsletters issued locally and contact with our partners.

Disadvantaged groups and educational establishments are also invited to become involved.

The project will build on previous environmental initiatives such as hedge planting, rubbish clearing, scrub clearing and bird & bat boxes installation by the local community.

The woodland is set in one of the oldest parts of Norwich (it used to be Thorpe-Next Norwich) and the heritage aspect will set the context of the woodland within local history. The local history group are supporting our research.

Reasons for the project, and the supporting activities

Protect and promote the woodland by:

  • Involving the local community in its maintenance
  • Raising awareness of its context within local heritage
  • Educational walks by volunteers
Enhance the woodland, and its use, for current and future generations
  • Thinning out invasive species and planting with more suitable native trees for wildlife
  • Building steps into the woodland
  • Provide interpretation boards and produce information leaflets
  • Wildlife surveys

Enabling volunteers

  • Running training courses to increase skills
  • Purchase equipment for workdays in the woodland
